This is his first year home-schooling. He attended a private Christian school previously. He completed algebra I in 9th grade and geometry in 10th grade at his school. We began the year using Teaching Textbooks because a friend lent it to me, but I quickly began looking for a different curriculum because TT was basically the same curriculum that he had completed two years ago in Algebra I at his school.

I though Math-U-See would be better after reading some good reviews, but unfortunately found out that it, too, was really more of an algebra I curriculum and barely begins to introduce any algebra II skills. I have since discovered that Saxon has a much better algebra II curriculum, and we are going to have to spend the summer going through that to get him up to the level where he can take pre-calc and trig in the fall. I should have looked at Math-U-See more closely before purchasing it. It only has 31 lessons. How can they possibly cover all of the concepts of algebra II in 31 lessons? Saxon has ! Any other helpful hints: Look at it carefully before purchasing, especially if you have been using another curriculum previously. It may not be as advanced as you need it to be.

Also, don't count on the video instruction to be able to thoroughly explain the concepts to your student. Steve Demme is horrible at explaining higher math concepts. He may be better at explaining elementary concepts, but the videos for the algebra 2 curriculum are not adequate to explain difficult concepts. Lisa Review left April 22, Time: 1 year Your situation: I had a son in public school that was falling behind. He was good at basic skills, adding, subtracting, multiplying but word problems were impossible. He did poorly on tests because he got confused and his self confidence was suffering. They are word problems that are relevant to what he might do in real life. We started at the bottom and are working our way up.

Mastering each part is the best part. His confidence is way up. What I was most surprised about were the "gaps" he had in his math. Without MUS we would never have known this is why he was struggling. Now that he has all the tools he is doing so well. Any other helpful hints: I strongly recommend working your way up. Worrying about grade equivalents does not help your child. Like they said - there is always enough time to reteach the second time.

Save time and do it right the first time! Thank you MUS for transforming my son and our life! Darcia Review left January 16, Time: 1 month Level: Alpha Your situation:As a new homeschooling mom of an apraxic 8-year-old daughter, this has become a wonderful resource and tool for her to learn math. She was struggling with the more conventional, less visual methods amd is flying through Alpha now with the visual blocks. It is also nice that she does not have to write very much on each worksheet- she practices writing when she works on reading, and math should be more about learning the concepts. So far we are very pleased! I understand that it doesn't teach to the standardized tests, but for now my daughter is getting the concepts down and that is what matters, so we'll cross the testing bridge when we get to it.

My boys are very motivated to do well, so they can skip all the extra practices! If they get it in one practice, they can skip the other four. They don't write in the books either. Our book can be used again. Sheri Review left August 13, Time: Eight years Your situation: I have been home schooling two of my four children for the last eight years. My older son graduated this year He is a very independent, quick learner who was often bored in school through 3rd grade. My youngest has dyslexia and needed intensive remediation for reading and math after two K-1st grades in school. We could not afford to wait for the school to figure out the best way to teach our struggling son while he continued to lose ground, so I quit my job and taught myself how to best teach him.

One of the reasons we were excited to have access to the digital library of instructional videos is that we have one tv with a blue ray player to watch the math lessons on DVD. Usually, on Monday, we watch the lesson and then work through the workbook, using the lesson book throughout the week. We can stop and pause, but if we mess with it at all, we start over. This gets frustrating. We were on lesson 13 or 14 in the midst of graphing, slope intercept formula, and solving simultaneous equations. Demme was talking faster than we could both keep up with our pencils. Yes, I am trying to learn Alg 1 alongside Jon.

He lets us, the at home students, know when to pause the video so we can work the problem and see if we understand and can do it without him, the resume play and he shows us how it is done. We can follow along with our graph paper and notebook paper. On the computer — you can also build with the manipulative app and follow Mr. Demme in class. You can click on a bar to make it negative, right click to flip it. After the online instructional video — you can either use your book, or print out the Lesson Summary PDF. I like having the lesson in front of me while I watch the video.

Demme says. Each example in the streaming video is given in the text, along with a few extra. He VERY quickly and enthusiastically said yes to both counts. He really likes being able to watch the videos on the go and to be able to control the rewind. He says he now has a full comprehension of the lessons, and we have done well on lessons now. The ease of being able to watch the lessons anywhere, on the phone, Kindle Fire, Laptop or computer has made it so we are always on track. Considerations: If, like us, you already have the Math-U-See package, you can purchase the digital pack separately. The main part that does not come with the Digital Package is the Student Workbook.

There are no student worksheets available online, other than the extra practice sheet. I will still need to purchase the Student Workbook moving forward. The Digital Package has a 12 month access. The Manipulative App works best on Chrome and Safari.

August 17, at am I googled homeschooling math help and came to your site. We are finishing math u see alpha next week as we head into 2nd and 3rd grade at home. My 2nd grader gets it and it doing well. He is also great at visual memory which helps with math facts. My 3rd grader hates math, is a little lazy and is struggling. I invested in this program because i thought it would be better for him, yet we are still struggling. And i may lose my mind in this process. August 17, at pm Hugs, Melodie.

Constant battles are no fun at all, and definitely not what any of us dreamed of when we started homeschooling. Could you share a little more about what exactly is going on with your 3rd grader? For example, what types of material has he struggled with in Alpha? Does he struggle in other subjects as well? Is his negative attitude only in math, or in other subjects as well? Lizie May 15, at pm Kate, My turned 7 yo son is finishing alpha and is so demotivated doing math. He used to like it. We went from right start math to mus because it was too teacher intensive. I am a full time RN. But as my husband says mus has mastered boredom. Anyways, I am looking at singapore math, which originally is what we were going I go with. I like it is not too much writing like horizons and not too distracting. My daughter also started on primer she is 5 and does not like it. I think my kids actually like math. The oldest one for sure.

Any thoughts? I have all materials of RSM still. What would be a good fit after Singapore? We will probably start with 1b at least, as he is finishing 1st grade or do a placement test. Any other thoughts to make this hopefully a successful and final switch? May 17, at pm Hi Lizzie, It definitely sounds like a switch is in order! Singapore will be a great fit for your family, for all the reasons you mention. Once you do the placement test, you should be good to go. Katrina July 5, at pm Hi Kate! So I had my son take the placement test for Right Start D, and he was ready for it. I believe this was due to the part-spiral nature of the program. I chose that option because of the base-ten emphasis, and because MUS is often available for cheap through people from our co-op.

After trying to talk with him about, I believe he simply prefers the larger font and more white space of MUS. I am considering continuing how I am going — using Right Start as my main curriculum and using MUS as a supplement almost like a Kumon book on steroids that aligns in scope and sequence better. HOWEVER, I am worried that this will be too labor-intensive for me which generally translates into getting through the curriculum slowly. So I am wondering. I feel like if I do MUS with Singapore CWP, he may not miss out conceptual understanding or his ability to do word problems, but on actually learning the math concept initially through logic and discovery. I have thought that Right Start excelled at this. But then I keep thinking that I am going to have to leave Right Start eventually as we are almost done with it. Any helpful thoughts?? Katrina July 5, at pm I should add that his math acument is one of the reasons we homeschooled in the first place, and that my tentative plan after completing the Right Start series would be to move on to AoPS with MUS supplement if I could get that to work.

The Student Workbook contains a number of worksheets for each lesson along with systematic review pages. They are not designed to meet the requirements of a high school honors-level course and the designation "Honors" cannot be added to the course description even if all Honors pages are completed. The Tests Booklet provides opportunities for assessment with a test for each chapter, unit tests that cover multiple chapters, and a final test. Test answers are in the Instruction Manual. The Math-U-See system features step-by-step procedures for introducing, reviewing, practicing, and mastering concepts; each lesson includes a video, and many of the lessons from Primer through Algebra 1 use hands-on manipulatives not-included. Teachers watch the video lesson to learn the new concept and how to demonstrate it; they then present the new concept to the student using the build-write-say model; finally, students practice the new concept using lesson practice problems from the student workbook.

In this case, it is fast adding of a negative number. After three days you will owe six dollars. This will be the opposite of what we just learned, so we are back to being positive. There are only two options for a number, either it is negative or positive. Since we first learned about multiplication, we always multiplied positive numbers times positive numbers. To understand a negative number times a negative number, let's review what we know so far with several more examples. We know that two wrongs don't make a right, but when multiplying two negative numbers, the product is a positive number.

Here are a couple more ways of thinking of this to help us understand a difficult concept. In language we know that a double negative is a positive. I used to ask students if they were going to the local town fair. I would respond by saying that I would see them there. Another way to think of it is using the idea of opposites in the previous lesson. Using brackets for clarification, I can write -3 -7 as -[ 3 -7 ] by moving the negative sign in front of the 3 outside of the brackets. After multiplying 3 -7 , we have inside the brackets. The same holds for four negative signs. Whenever you have an even number of negative signs the answer is positive, and an odd number of negative signs produces a negative answer. See Figure 1. It excels in its hands-on presentation of math concepts that enables students to understand how math works. It is one of the rare multi-sensory math programs that continues to use manipulatives up through Algebra 1. This basic idea, consistently used throughout the program—even through algebra—is one of the best ways to demonstrate math concepts. There is also a digital app version of the manipulatives that offers a virtual experience with the manipulatives.

The app is available for iOS devices. Parents and teachers with a new or renewed enthusiasm for math then do a much better job teaching their own children. The program also builds in systematic review for previously learned concepts. The Greek letter designations were chosen particularly to emphasize the order of learning rather than grade level designation. Placement tests for the different levels are available free at the Math-U-See website.
